Abstract— Nine lakes containing self-sustaining populations of brook trout ( Salvelinus fontinalis ) were surveyed to provide quantitative information on the abundance and distribution of redd sites. We measured rates of groundwater flow at redds in four of these lakes, and in one of these lakes we also compared the frequency of site use over four years from spawning observations. The number of redd sites in each lake ranged from 1 to 53 (mean=30) with most found relatively close to shore (∼ 1 m deep). Spawning areas per lake (16.9–829.4 m2) were not related to lake size and were often not continuous areas of littoral zone habitat. Rates of groundwater flow in lakes, averaged across redd sites in each lake, ranged from 20.0 to 107.9 ml. m.−2 min−1. The intensive survey of redd site use in one lake demonstrated that only 11% of sites (10 of 92) were used in all four years of observation. The mean rates of groundwater flow at sites used in all four years were significantly greater than at sites used intermittently. Data from this and other studies point to the conservation of subcatchments associated with groundwater discharge areas used by spawning brook trout as a means of maintaining self-sustaining populations.  相似文献

通过喷涂和预处理两种方法将不同浓度植酸酶添加到豆粕型金鳟(Oncorhynchus mykissW albaum)饲料中,研究了植酸酶对金鳟粪磷及养殖水环境中磷含量的影响。金鳟粪磷分析结果显示,喷涂法添加植酸酶,对照组中粪磷含量最高,其他各试验组较对照组差异显著(P<0.05),但500~2000 U/kg组中粪磷含量差异显著(P<0.05),2500~6000 U/kg组中粪磷含量无显著差异(P(0.05);预处理法添加植酸酶,对照组粪磷含量最高,其他各试验组粪磷含量较对照组降低显著(P<0.05),但添加植酸酶的各试验组之间差异不显著(P(0.05)。通过水中磷含量试分析结果显示,无论是喷涂法添加植酸酶还是预处理法添加植酸酶,各试验组水体总磷含量分别较其对照组差异不显著(P(0.05),各试验组的活性磷含量均未检出。实验结果表明,金鳟饲料中添加植酸酶可以降低粪磷含量,对养殖生产过程中控制磷的排放,减少磷污染具有重要的意义。  相似文献

Abstract – Management policies balancing harvest and conservation of natural populations of fish are difficult to establish, both scientifically and politically. This issue is particularly difficult when those populations represent native genetic resources. Since 1997, several brown trout populations in the eastern Pyrenees Mountains (Spain) were designated as ‘genetic refuges’ under varying fishing regulations, where releases of hatchery‐origin fish are not permitted. We analysed genetic variation in samples of brown trout from six of those refuge populations and four non‐refuge populations within the same region. Each population was sampled in four separate years: 1993, 1999, 2004 and 2006. Our analyses were based on a diagnostic allele (LDH‐C*90) that distinguishes native and exogenous hatchery populations. Comparisons were based on stocking histories before and after refuge designations and on three management strategies: fished, unfished and catch‐and‐release. Overall, we detected significant genetic introgression resulting from past stocking practices despite the current restriction of hatchery releases imposed by the recent genetic refuge policy. However, this new policy has prevented detectable introgression from increasing throughout the region and together with additional measures on length and number of captured fish is contributing to self‐sustained fisheries that are achieving conservation goals. Quick acceptance of ‘genetic refuges’ by anglers in one particular river, the Ter River basin, has been a key factor in protecting native gene pools compared with the Segre River basins where refuges were not readily accepted.  相似文献

Reference (physiological) value intervals determined by the lower 2.5% and upper 97.5% quantiles were calculated for total calcium (Ca t ) and inorganic phosphate (P) in farmed rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss , at an age of 10–12 months in raceway culture. Total calcium levels were significantly ( P ≤0.0009) greater in males (2.63–4 mmol L−1, n =47, mean weight 359±142 g) than in immature females (2.48–3.97 mmol L−1, n =410, mean weight 400±145 g). The reference range for P in immature females and males was 3.09–9.32 mmol L−1 ( n =467, mean weight 401±144 g). The distribution and density of the quantiles in the tested reference group were made possible by the use of histograms, which showed normal distributions for Ca t in males but not for Ca t and P in immature females and males, in which a sinistral asymmetry was found.  相似文献

The microbial diversity of culturable intestinal microflora of wild freshwater salmonid fishes salmon Salmo salar and sea trout Salmo trutta trutta juveniles (0+ years old) from the same environmental conditions were investigated by means of molecular identification techniques and analysis of diet. Significant differences in the intestinal microbial diversity were observed in different fish species. The predominant group in the intestinal tract of the salmon comprised representatives of the Enterobacteriaceae family (23%), Plesiomonas (19.2%) and Carnobacterium (15.3%). Predominant microbiota in sea trout intestinal tract were Enterobacteriaceae (52%), Aeromonas (22%) and Pseudomonas (14%). The results show that Enterobacteriaceae were predominant in the intestinal tract of the salmon and the sea trout juveniles raised on diets of different compositions. However, molecular identification of the intestinal microbiota at the species or genus level revealed differences in these fish species. Bacteria in the hindgut of salmon included Pragia and Serratia. However, bacteria in the gut contents of sea trout from the Enterobacteriaceae family were Buttiauxella, Enterobacter, Moellerella, Pantoea, Rahnella and Tiedjeia arctica. A novel phylotype of T. arctica is harbored in the intestinal tract of wild salmon, and may correspond to a previously undescribed species.  相似文献

Abstract – This study documents substantial small-scale spatial variation in age and size at maturity of brown trout ( Salmo trutta ) found either in allopatry (above major waterfalls) or in sympatry (below waterfalls) with the Alpine bullhead ( Cottus poecilopus ) in forest streams in south-east Norway. Within two streams, female brown trout above waterfalls tended to delay the onset of sexual maturity, as compared with females from neighbouring sites below the waterfalls. Four additional streams were represented with either an allopatric or a sympatric site. There was considerable variation in age and size at maturity among these streams, but no consistent difference between allopatric and sympatric sites. It is suggested that the spatial variation in maturity responses is influenced by local opportunities for growth, and possibly also survival. Earlier studies in these streams have linked spatial variation in brown trout behaviour and demography to the presence or absence of the Alpine bullhead.  相似文献

Flavobacterium psychrophilum infections cause high mortality among rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, fry in Danish fish farms and hatcheries. Hatcheries based entirely on bore‐hole water recirculation systems have been suggested as a possibility for eliminating F. psychrophilum or at least keeping the amount of this bacterium low. The occurrence of the bacterium in a bore‐hole water recirculation system was compared with a combined bore‐hole water and stream water flow‐through system in a hatchery where outbreaks of rainbow trout fry syndrome caused by F. psychrophilum often occurred. Broodfish, unfertilized and fertilized eggs, eyed eggs and fry, as well as water samples from the tanks/troughs with broodfish/fry, were examined. Suspect yellow bacterial colonies were either confirmed or rejected as F. psychrophilum by growth characteristics and by PCR. As both virulent and less virulent F. psychrophilum isolates are known, isolates were characterized. The isolates were ribotyped and grouped according to ribotyping patterns. Representatives of the groups were serotyped. Fry isolates were very homogeneous whereas isolates from broodfish were heterogeneous, whether the isolates originated from external surfaces of the fish (mucus from skin and gills, haemorrhages and ulcers) or internal organs. Flavobacterium psychrophilum was isolated from broodfish in both water systems; 56% of investigated broodfish from the borehole/flowthrough system and 36% from the recirculation facility harboured the bacterium. In the recirculation system, the bacterium was isolated from fish (ulcers, milt, liver, abdominal cavity) kept in the system for 11 months. Flavobacterium psychrophilum was found in milt and ovarian fluid as well as on the surface of fertilized eggs, but not inside the eggs. Fry also harboured F. psychrophilum, but in the water recirculation system the bacterium was first isolated from the fry after they had been graded. Flavobacterium psychrophilum was found regularly in other parts of the hatchery (outside the recirculation facility), including at the time of grading, suggesting that the occurrence of F. psychrophilum in the fry recirculation facility was due to contamination from the borehole/flowthrough hatchery. It is suggested that the combination of bore‐hole water recirculation systems and good management procedures (including egg disinfection) is a possible method for hatcheries to avoid disease outbreaks due to F. psychrophilum.  相似文献

Abstract: The Melanesian sub‐region of the South Pacific, in particular, has been branded by some political analysts as an ‘arc of instability’ because of upheavals such as coups (Fiji), ethnic conflict (Solomon Islands), paramilitary revolts (Vanuatu), and secessionist rebellion and civil war (Bougainville‐Papua New Guinea and the Southern Highlands). Simplistic notions and prejudices about the region pose challenges for journalists attempting to report with depth, context and analytical skill. Pressures and dilemmas for the news media continue to gain momentum in the South Pacific, often from a cultural as well as socio‐political dimension. While the media in some countries is refreshingly outspoken and courageous, in others it has a trend towards self‐censorship. This article critiques coverage in the region and some of the problems in an age of globalisation and preoccupation with security. It also sketches the challenges for media education designed to contest images of the region beyond ‘coups, conflicts and contraband’.  相似文献

Abstract –  The effect of an embedded substratum on emigration and growth in juvenile brown trout was investigated in an artificial stream with sand added to produce sections of embedded or nonembedded substratum. Fish were allowed to leave the sections and were caught daily in a downstream trap. After catching and counting, fish were put back in their original section in order to keep the same amount of fish. Captures were high only on the first days after fish release. During the first 6 days after fish release, downstream-moving fish were more numerous in the embedded than in the nonembedded sections. The embedded substratum significantly decreased the final mean body weight and condition factor and increased heterogeneity in fish size. We suggest that a decrease in the habitat carrying capacity for juveniles could be the main factor explaining this result.  相似文献

In the present study, the effects of different sources of selenium (Se; sodium selenite or selenomethionine) supplementation on the growth and serum concentrations of oxidative stress markers [malondialdehyde (MDA), 8‐isoprostane, glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px) activity] and muscle Se, MDA and heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) levels in rainbow trouts were evaluated. The fish (n = 360; 0 + years old) with initial average weight of 20 ± 0.8 g were randomly assigned to 12 treatment groups consisting of 3 replicates of 10 fish each in a 2 × 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments (stocking densities, Se sources, Se levels). The fish were kept at low (25 kg m?3) or high (100 kg m?3) stocking densities and fed a basal (control) diet or the basal diet supplemented with either 0.15 or 0.30 mg of Se kg?1 of diet from two different forms: sodium selenite or selenomethionine. High stocking density decreased weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio (FCR) when basal diet was fed (P = 0.001). A linear increase in feed intake and weight gain and improvement in FCR were found in sodium selenite (P = 0.01)‐ or selenomethionine (P = 0.001)‐supplemented fish reared under crowding conditions. Serum and muscle Se levels and serum GSH‐Px activity increased (P = 0.001) linearly, whereas serum and muscle MDA concentrations and serum 8‐isoprostane decreased linearly as dietary sodium selenite (P = 0.01) or selenomethionine (P = 0.001) supplementation increased. Selenomethionine and sodium selenite supplementation decreased Hsp70 in the muscle of fish reared under crowding conditions (P < 0.05). Supplementation with Se improved growth and antioxidant status of fish and the effects of selenomethionine were relatively greater than sodium selenite in the crowded groups. Results suggest that crowding conditions cause significant detrimental effects in rainbow trout indicated by increased oxidative stress, reduced feed intake and body weight gain. ?t also indicates that dietary Se supplementation offers a feasible way of reducing the losses in performance of rainbow trout reared under crowding conditions. Selenomethionine seems to be more effective than sodium selenite and the higer dose in the present study also seems to be more effective than the lower dose.  相似文献
